Since 27 August 2026 you can legally buy a solar kit, plug it into a normal socket, and start generating — no installer, no scaffolding. Here’s the law in plain English, and the kit we actually run.
Bills went up again this winter. The price cap rose 4% on 1 October to £1,723 a year for a typical home — the fourth winter running above pre-crisis prices — and it resets again on 1 January. Every kWh your roof makes is one you never buy at 26.32p.

Based on SI 2026/848 and the government’s Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification (v2, July 2026). Good plain-English explainers: Fuse Energy and TechRadar. Checked 2026-10-19. Tell your home insurer before installing.
A well-placed 800W kit facing somewhere near south produces roughly 600–750 kWh a year in most of the UK. Used rather than exported, that’s worth around £160–£200 a year at the current 26.32p capped rate — against kits that commonly cost £400–£800, experts put payback at 3–5 years. It won’t run a whole house; it quietly erases your fridge, router and standby load all day.
We long-term test an Anker SOLIX Solarbank — a plug-in battery that pairs with balcony panels. Two honest notes before you buy anything:
1. Solar-plus-battery kits sold as one box sit outside the plug-in specification above, so check the exact model is on the ENA register before self-connecting panels — or have it professionally installed.
2. As a pure plug-in battery it works today with no paperwork at all: charge it from cheap overnight electricity, run your appliances from it at peak prices. On a smart tariff that arbitrage alone can cover the kit — the solar is a bonus.
The Solarbank we run: plugs in, stores cheap or solar power, no installer needed.

Switch & get £50Plug-in is the cheapest way in — but per pound, a full 4 kW roof install saves 3–4× more each year and adds export income. If you own your roof, start with your town’s real numbers: find your town.
