Solar in Coleford: autumn 2026 update
Three things changed this autumn that matter if you’re weighing up panels here: bills went up again, local installs kept climbing, and DIY plug-in solar became legal.
1. The price cap rose 4% — again
The price cap rose 4% on 1 October to £1,723 a year for a typical home — the fourth winter running above pre-crisis prices — and it resets again on 1 January. For a home in Coleford, that maths is direct: a 4 kW roof here makes about 4,050 kWh a year, and every one of those units is one you stop buying at 26.32p — roughly £480–£800 a year kept in your pocket at current rates.
2. The Forest of Dean keeps installing
Installs across the Forest of Dean grew about 40% between 2023 and 2025, and 14.0% of local homes now generate their own power (DESNZ official statistics). That’s not early-adopter territory any more — it’s your neighbours’ roofs quietly paying for themselves.
The Forest of Dean is quietly becoming a solar district: Forest Community Energy — set up with the district council — is developing community-owned rooftop solar on public buildings, part of the council’s carbon-neutral-by-2030 plan.
3. Plug-in solar is now legal
Since 27 August 2026, UK households can legally self-install small plug-in solar kits: up to 800W through a standard socket, using approved kits on the ENA type-test register, with a simple online notification to your network operator afterwards. Renters can formally request permission too. It won’t power a whole house, but it’s the cheapest legitimate way into solar yet — our DIY & plug-in guide covers the rules and our tested kit.
Help is still there for eligible households: the ECO4 scheme for eligible homes, plus 0% VAT on panels and batteries UK-wide.
